The single biggest decision when buying a Mekhela Sador isn’t colour — it’s fabric. The fabric decides how it feels in your climate, how it drapes, how you care for it, and where you can wear it. Here is an honest, practical guide to the main types, and which suits which moment.
Everyday cottons
Cotton is the workhorse of the Mekhela Sador — breathable, comfortable in Assam’s heat, and easy to maintain. It’s ideal for daily wear, office, college and daytime events. Finishing touches
Beyond the fabric itself, a few finishing options let you make a piece truly your own. When you order, you can add falls and lace stitching on the Sador for a clean, weighted edge that drapes beautifully; a tassel (jhulka) and dohi finish on the Chador for a traditional, decorative touch; and Mekhela stitching so the lower piece arrives tailored and ready to wear. A note on silk — Muga & Pat
Assam’s grandest Mekhela Sadors have traditionally been woven in golden Muga and Pat silk — heirloom handloom pieces, treasured and expensive. Chadorkart doesn’t sell handloom silk; we focus on machine-woven cotton and poly that capture the look and grace of the Mekhela Sador at an everyday price.
